How to Convert acts as a drag and drop user interface to communicate with its own custom conversion software and a bunch of command-line tools in a way that is accessible to non-developers. It can execute any of the following tools as separate processes via shell commands: sips, FFmpeg, Pandoc, LibreOffice, ImageMagick, MiKTeX (Windows), and MacTeX (macOS). If needed, installing these tools is simple and easy with step-by-step instructions provided in the app. If you face any difficulties, please reach out for help!
It uses some third party tools, simply because they are the best tools for the job, but are difficult to use if you are not comfortable with the command-line. Some of these tools are open source, so you can always modify their separate executables and access their source code. This approach ensures compliance with licenses by maintaining clear separation between How to Convert and other tools - they remain independent programs that are invoked through standard shell commands. Visit the Settings → About section in the app to view full license texts.
Yes, all files are processed locally in your web browser and do not leave your device. If you get the app, then files are converted completely offline.
Your files are not sent to external servers like other file conversion websites or apps. How to Convert or its developer cannot see or store any file you convert.
You can verify this by switching off your Wifi or inspecting with Chrome Developer Tools. Check it yourself.
