5 Best VOB to MP4 Converters in 2026

Got a home DVD or a VOB file you want to watch as an MP4? I’ve rounded up five options, including free tools and the app I made. Here’s how to use each.

1. How to Convert

Mac, Windows, Linux · $29 once

This is the one I made. It converts standalone VOB clips, and you can use the same app for almost any other file: photos, audio, documents and more. It finds and runs the conversion tools for you.

  1. 1. Add your files. Drag your VOB files into How to Convert.

  2. 2. Choose the output and convert. Choose MP4 from the output menu and click Convert.

2. HandBrake

Mac, Windows, Linux · Free

Free video conversion with presets and a queue. It re-encodes the picture rather than copying existing video unchanged.

  1. Choose Open Source and select VIDEO_TS, or a single VOB if that is all you have. Use the Title preview and duration to find the recording you want.
  2. Select General → Fast 1080p30 in Presets and check that Format is MP4. This is a useful starting point for an ordinary sharing copy.
  3. Choose a filename and destination, then click Start or Start Encode. Play the finished MP4 on the device that needs it.

Check the finished duration and audio language. The MP4 contains the video, not the DVD’s clickable menus.

3. Shutter Encoder

A free alternative with detailed video controls.

  1. Add your VOB clip and choose H.264 with the .mp4 extension.
  2. Choose an output folder and click Start function.

4. Movavi Video Converter

Mac, Windows · Paid; limited trial

A paid option with trimming tools. Trial exports have restrictions.

  1. Add your video files, choose MP4 in the output formats and pick a preset matching your resolution.
  2. Choose the save folder and click Convert.

5. CloudConvert

An occasional conversion without installing an app. Files upload to its servers; free limits apply.

  1. Click Select File and choose your VOB file.
  2. Set the output to MP4, click Convert, then download the result.
