5 Best WMV to MP4 Converters in 2026

Have an old WMV video you want to watch or share? MP4 is usually easier to open on other devices. I’ve rounded up five conversion options, including free tools and my own app.

1. How to Convert

Mac, Windows, Linux · $29 once

This is the one I made. How to Convert handles almost any file, so the same app works for video, music, photos and documents. You choose the output and click Convert; it finds and runs the tools for you.

  1. 1. Add your files. Drag your WMV files into How to Convert.

  2. 2. Choose the output and convert. Choose MP4 from the output menu and click Convert.

This makes a new MP4 by re-encoding the video.

2. HandBrake

Mac, Windows, Linux · Free

Free video conversion with presets and a queue. It re-encodes the picture rather than copying existing video unchanged.

  1. Click Open Source and select your WMV file.
  2. Select General → Fast 1080p30 in Presets and check that Format is MP4. This is a useful starting point for an ordinary sharing copy.
  3. Choose a filename and destination, then click Start or Start Encode. Play the finished MP4 on the device that needs it.

Check the beginning, middle and end of the MP4. If the WMV requires an old playback licence, conversion will not remove that restriction.

3. Shutter Encoder

A free alternative with detailed video controls.

  1. Add your WMV clip and choose H.264 with the .mp4 extension.
  2. Choose an output folder and click Start function.

4. Movavi Video Converter

A paid option with trimming tools. Trial exports have restrictions.

  1. Add your video files, choose MP4 in the output formats and pick a preset matching your resolution.
  2. Choose the save folder and click Convert.

5. CloudConvert

An occasional conversion without installing an app. Files upload to its servers; free limits apply.

  1. Click Select File and choose your WMV file.
  2. Set the output to MP4, click Convert, then download the result.
