PDF vs CBZ for Comics: Which Format Should You Use?

Compare PDF and CBZ for digital comics, manga scans, page order, image quality, metadata, reader support, editing, and conversion.

Use CBZ when the file is basically a stack of comic pages and you want to read it in a comic app. Use PDF when you need a normal document that is easy to print, annotate or open almost anywhere.

Neither format automatically gives you better-looking pages. The important question is what is inside the source and which reader you want to use.

What a CBZ file actually is

A CBZ is a ZIP file containing numbered page images. Comic readers understand that list of images and add comic-friendly controls such as right-to-left reading, two-page spreads and easy page navigation.

A PDF is a page-based document. It can contain selectable text, links, bookmarks and vector artwork as well as images. Turning it into CBZ usually turns every page into an image, so text search and links may disappear.

How to convert one comic safely

  1. Keep the original file

Make the PDF or CBZ as a new copy. Do not rename or replace the source, because the two formats can keep different features.

  2. Drag the comic into How to Convert

The filename appears on the left. The example below starts with a four-page CBZ and makes a PDF copy.

  3. Choose the output format

Choose PDF when you want a normal document copy, or CBZ when you want a PDF comic in a comic reader.

  4. Click Convert

Wait for the completed message, then save the new file somewhere separate from the source.

  5. Read the result

Check the first, middle and final pages. Also try search, page direction and a double-page spread if those features matter to you.

Common problems

Pages are in the wrong order

The images inside the CBZ were named in an order the reader did not expect.

Use names such as 0001, 0002 and 0010, then rebuild the CBZ.

The lettering is blurry

The PDF pages were turned into images at too small a size.

Convert again at a larger page size from the original PDF.

Search stopped working

The CBZ contains page images rather than the PDF text layer.

Use the original PDF when search matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBZ better for manga?

Often, because manga readers understand right-to-left order and image pages. Test the reader you use.

Does CBZ reduce image quality?

The CBZ container does not. Quality changes only if the pages are resized or saved again during conversion.

Can I open CBZ as ZIP?

Yes. A CBZ is a ZIP archive using a comic-book extension.

Which one is better for printing?

PDF is normally easier because it is built around fixed pages and print workflows.

Extra: Why PDF to CBZ can lose search

A PDF can store real text on top of or beside the page artwork. A CBZ normally stores only images. When the PDF pages are rendered into JPG or PNG files, that text is no longer a separate searchable layer.

Keep the PDF whenever bookmarks, selectable text, annotations or printing are important. The CBZ can still be a useful reading copy.
